Time has a way of passing us all by. Blink and another year passes. Close your eyes and who knows when you’ll wake up…… I felt that I was in the creative equivalent of neutral for a few years. Lots of ideas, not a lot of execution. So at the end of 2017 we decided to try something new for both the writing and recording process. Americana, bluegrass and ‘old time’ country have added a lot to our listening lists for a while now, so the idea of using more acoustic instruments made sense.
The voicing of the variety of acoustic instruments makes all of them very audible in a song mix. Two acoustic guitars might step on each other, but add mandolin or banjo and they stand out. Hand percussion. Twelve string guitar. Fretless bass. Whatever’s laying around. Oh, we’re not abandoning loud, reverby feedback guitars. Just stirring it all in. You might associate the acoustic instruments with bluegrass music but we’re not looking to work in that style. Or maybe yes. Anything’s possible.
So to learn how the instruments sound together, how to arrange the songs, how to do mic placement, what pre-amps to use, what effects, etc, etc, we decided to re-imagine some cover songs we like. Some of the songs will be quickly recorded, some will have more production. We’ll also be starting to work more with video, both ‘live’ and produced. In the mean time we’re writing and recording new original material. Stick around, it should be interesting.
First song up: ‘It’s Gonna Be A Long Night’ by Ween. Did you ever know one of those “I can drink anyone under the table” types. Ween evidently did. Times 100.

Apparently, good things come in three’s… after discovering that Opossum Holler has a twitter account, which I promptly followed (too bad I don’t live in Kentucky, I’d love to see them play), I also discovered that they released some new stuff back in December (2015). Apparently the rock I live under is a rather limited resource for new music. Oh, and something about their description of their genre on ReverbNation touches my heart, kindred spirits of doom to say the least.

I bought Feelings for the Living today, but may go back for the whole album. I loved their release of Screamin’ Delta Demon and Hex. They are on Bandcamp (saved the best for last) – GO CHECK THEM OUT. In the words of Arnold, “GO NOW!”.

It appears that the eclectic collective Steaming Mulch has finally spit out a new tune. We never quite know what we’re going to hear, but that makes it all the more interesting. The word is that there are more song partials traveling around the studio at ChurchHouse, so we should hear the next one soon……ish. Their sense of time does not mesh well with the real world. As always your guess is as good as ours as to the origins of the title (go ahead, guess. we’ll wait…………).

Music making technology continues to evolve. I ran across this in my internet travels and since Monday is always a happy day, I decided to share it with you. The tech is custom designed metal and computer ummm….stuff….I’ve attached the article which can explain it better.
So, if you’re going to make music with computers and metal, what would it sound like? It would be happy, of course, although I’m starting to wonder if my idea of happiness is a bit askewwww….

OK, you’re still happy, right? After you consume something, you should cleanse your palette. So, before you return to the land of doom, here’s a video extra. I realize you may see the band name, The Obits, and go, well I’m not sure this fits the idea of lightening up. But it’s my kind of sound, guitar rock, nice sound separation, cool running bass line. I also really like the sound they got for the guitars, tight and crisp. The video looks like it was shot at one of the many practice spaces I enjoyed back in the day.
If you’re not happy yet, I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do for you.

As always with our group of friends it was recorded, mixed and mastered at ChurchHouse Productions Studio. It’s for everyone who’s had to find their way out of their own personal ‘Mordor’.
Yo, Mel – this one’s for you.
A lot of the music I like the best has one component in common – groove. It’s easy to hear in dance records from Industrial to Disco. But it’s also in places you wouldn’t expect – punk blues like The Gun Club or Americana like Reverend Peyton. The beat catches you and pulls you in to the song. It has a physical presence, it makes your body move.
Nile Rodgers is one of the great masters of groove. In this video he talks about finding the groove in all types of music. You may be surprised at some of the places you’ve heard his guitar playing without even realizing it.
His latest work is with Daft Punk. A lot of people like to trash ‘disco’. Where do you think a lot of the current dance music came from? You can really hear the guitar groove in ‘Get Lucky’.
Saw these guys on Letterman and just had to share it. At this point there may be nothing really ‘new’ or ‘original’ in the world of rock and roll. So what. Doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of good stuff going on. At ChurchHouse we enjoy and record a lot of different styles – and try to share what we find on this blog as well as info on studio tech, the music business, art and whatever else floats our happy little boat. Watching this made me feel that balls to the wall badassery is alive and well. It’s one thing to do it in the studio but pulling it off live with a classic four person rock lineup…….

Another gem from Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Real simple – vocal, guitar, drums, percussion. No over production. There’s a studio lesson to be learned there – the song is good; record it; don’t f*** it up. God, I love some open space in a song so it can breathe.
And it’s the friggin funniest video I’ve seen in a while. Same thing, a simple concept that fits the music.
